Star Champions Set for Etchells World Championship 2025

The Etchells National and World Championships, scheduled for January 10-14, 2025, at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, is shaping up to be an exciting event with a lineup of international competitors, including the recent Star Class World Champions, John Kostecki and Austin Sperry.

A Triumphant Return

After a 20-year hiatus from sailing together in the Star Class, Sperry and Kostecki made an incredible comeback, winning the Star World Championship by just one point. Reflecting on their victory, Sperry expressed his enthusiasm: “I am still living a dream. Going into the final race of the Worlds, there were six boats with a chance to win. Fortunately, we sailed a great last race and clinched the world championship by one point. What a relief!”

Transitioning to the Etchells

Sperry highlighted the natural shift from the Star Class to the Etchells, citing the quality of the fleet and the strong camaraderie within the class. “At 46, the Star is a very physical boat, and I’m not getting any younger. I've admired the Etchells Class for its consistent turnout and the talent it attracts. It’s exciting to learn from such a competitive group and make new connections.”

With a crew of three aboard, Sperry finds the new dynamic refreshing. The inclusion of the spinnaker is an added challenge, but he feels fortunate to have Kostecki and Noel “Nitro” Drennan as teammates. Nitro, a 2022 Etchells World Champion, brings a wealth of one-design and ocean racing experience, along with his expertise as a sailmaker for North Sails.

Focus on the Process

Despite their decorated crew lineup, Sperry remains focused on preparation rather than the outcome. “We never worry about the result; we focus on improving each day. There are so many variables in sailing beyond our control. We give it our full attention and trust the process.”
