Continue ShoppingAs the countdown to the 45th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race begins, an impressive fleet of 110 yachts has already registered for this iconic event, set to take place on October 19, 2024. Yachts from 29 countries, ranging from Australia to Finland, the United States to Hong Kong, are set to compete in what promises to be an exhilarating race across the Mediterranean. The Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) is delighted to witness such strong international participation and the continued enthusiasm surrounding this prestigious race.
David Cremona, the Commodore of RMYC, expressed his excitement, stating, “The Royal Malta Yacht Club is thrilled that such a talented and wide-ranging fleet is set to grace the magnificent Rolex Middle Sea Race course this year. We are looking forward to hosting this truly international fleet come October. Our welcome will be as hospitable as always, and together with our many race partners, we are working hard to ensure the experience for all crews is exceptional.”

This year’s fleet is as diverse as it is competitive, featuring 109 monohulls and one multihull, the Rapido 53 XS Picomole, which is fresh from a successful campaign at the Aegean 600. The largest vessels in the monohull fleet, Scallywag 100 and Black Jack 100, both measuring an impressive 30.48 meters (100 feet), are expected to be strong contenders for line honors. On the other end of the spectrum is the smallest entrant, Muttley-BDM Audit, at just 9.75 meters (32 feet), demonstrating the broad range of yachts competing in this offshore classic.
Notably, France and Italy are tied for the most entries, each fielding 21 teams, a historic first for the Rolex Middle Sea Race. The fierce competition between these two nations is just one of the many subplots set to unfold as the race progresses.
Sailors preparing for these diverse conditions know the importance of reliable gear. From durable sailing bags to protect essentials to high-performance sailing gloves for better grip during fast-paced maneuvers, the right equipment can make all the difference on race day.
All eyes will be on the monohull fleet racing under IRC Time Correction, with the coveted Rolex Middle Sea Race trophy awarded to the overall winner. The trophy, a magnificent sculpture created by Emanuel ‘Emvin’ Cremona in 1968, represents the rich heritage of this event, which has grown to become one of the most challenging offshore races in the world.
Among the favorites are past winners eager to add another victory to their record. Andrea Recordati’s Bullitt, a 28.3m Wally Yacht, is back to defend its title after securing overall victory in 2023 by just 24 seconds. Géry Trentesaux, who won in 2018 with Courrier Recommandé, returns with a new Sydney 43, Courrier Long, aiming to reclaim his spot at the top. The Maltese Podesta siblings, who made history with back-to-back victories in 2019 and 2020, will also be contenders to watch closely.
In addition to the seasoned competitors, several debutants are ready to make their mark. The two most powerful yachts, Scallywag 100 and Black Jack 100, are no strangers to success. Black Jack, under new ownership by Remon Vos, has already claimed line honors at the Giraglia and the Palermo-Montecarlo Race earlier this summer. Meanwhile, Didier Gaudoux’s double-handed Lann Ael 3, fresh from a strong performance at the Giraglia, is poised to be a dark horse in the race.
These experienced crews understand the value of sailing accessories like reliable deck shoes and advanced technical clothing, which can improve both safety and performance during demanding races.
Three female skippers will be commanding their own teams this year, including Linda Goddard on Bedouin, Nikki Henderson on Yagiza, and Ursula Berger on Sportski Vuk 44. These women bring a wealth of experience and are determined to leave their mark on the Rolex Middle Sea Race, with unfinished business after past attempts.
With just weeks to go before the start on Saturday, October 19, the Rolex Middle Sea Race is shaping up to be one of the most exciting editions yet. Late entries are being accepted until Friday, September 27, ensuring that the final fleet will continue to grow.
For those planning to follow the race, it promises to be an unforgettable spectacle, filled with intense competition, personal triumphs, and unexpected surprises as the fleet navigates the 606-nautical mile course through the heart of the Mediterranean. Whether you're racing or watching from the sidelines, having dependable sailing gear will ensure you're prepared for whatever the journey brings.
